Veterans Day is a celebration to honor all of America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. It is also a day for reflection–for remembering. We celebrate America’s true heroes. My super heroes don’t wear red capes, move faster than a speeding bullet, or have the power to leap tall buildings in a single bound. The super heroes I celebrate answered a call to duty to protect and defend the United States of America.
Sacrifice, Courage and Patriotism
Veterans Day gives us a chance to pause and honor the sacrifices, courage, and patriotism of the men and women who have worn a military uniform. America is the land of opportunity and a beacon of hope and freedom to the rest of the world because our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and Coast Guardsmen have fought valiantly to defeat tyranny and terror to protect the liberties we hold most dear.
Whether they stormed the beaches of Normandy, fought in the jungles of Vietnam, or battled in the sands of Iraq or the mountains of Afghanistan, our brave men and women in uniform have always put our country and values first.
Solemn Obligation to Veterans
Over time, our enemies may have changed, but the heroism displayed by our military never has. Our troops have protected us and defended our national security repeatedly and consistently. For that, we owe them our gratitude. As the daughter of World War II veteran, this is my personal and solemn obligation. I come from a family that has been embedded in service to our nation. We bleed red, white and blue.
“The Nation which forgets its defenders will be itself forgotten.” Calvin Coolidge
Recognize and Respect
We must always recognize and respect the service of those who keep us safe, not just on Veterans Day, but every day. There are about twenty-two million veterans in America to whom our debt can never be re-paid. These are the men and women that define LOVE for our country enough to sacrifice their lives if necessary. Veterans are defending our freedom 365 days a year. We have seen this demonstrated time and again by veterans from the American Revolution to the Global War on Terrorism.
Our Nation’s Veterans represent a fundamental truth. It’s not the powerful weapons that make our military the greatest in the world. Nor is it the advanced aircraft, missiles, rockets, satellites and cyber technology that make us the most advanced. The true strength of our Armed Forces is the spirit and skill of those who serve. Our strength is greatly enhanced through our sons and daughters who continue to answer the call to support and defend our nation and our freedoms around the world.
Thank You Veterans
Please join me in remembering those who served. Together, we will thank them for their selflessness, their sacrifice and bravery, and the part they played in advancing the cause of freedom and peace. We are a better nation because of their service.
To the brave and talented men and women who have taken the oath to serve; to you and your families, and to all our veterans — thank you.
